Video: TRU Eco and Sustainability Week

Joseph Chan, Race To A Million production assistant, takes up the challenge and makes his debut in this video interview of the TRU Eco Club for Sustainability Week. Bonnie Kloh and Rebecca Purdy join Joseph in our studio to take a closer look in this video.

TRU Eco is the campus environmental group at Thompson Rivers University promoting environmental awareness and environmental action at TRU. For Sustainability week they worked on a number of initiatives including a community art canvas of change, a trashion show (recycled material meets fashion show), and a speakers series on sustainability practices. From environmental economics to the net zero Y Dream Home the seminars were great and showed people many options to reduce negative environmental impact.

There are a number of ways for everyone to get involved with these initiatives next year so please watch the video to see the creative and passionate ideas that have been put forward this year and consider getting involved.

You can also check them out at http://tru-eco.weebly.com or look them up on Facebook using TRU Eco

Merry Christmas and happy new year from all of the staff at the Race to a Million. On behalf of our families we’d like to wish you a very special Merry Christmas and a very prosperous and happy new year. When we look back at 2010 we have some pretty great thoughts. We’ve been able to accomplish some wonderful things in the last few months. Each show seems to be improving every week. We’ve been able to show that nice people can finish first.  We’ve already seen some great examples of how you can make a profit and run a business in a sustainable way while at the same time making a difference in your community. We’d like to invite you to do the same. Please make a difference in other people’s lives. It’s amazing what you could accomplish when you step outside of your comfort zone and work with a great group of people on a common goal.

Video: Race To A Million 2010 Year in review Ep. 11

Since you’ve been inviting us into your home for the last few months we thought we’d invite you into one of ours.  Join us at Peter’s home, decorated for the holidays, as we talk review what has happened with the teams so far in the Race To A Million.

It’s been quite an adventure so far in the race and since we are switching the calendar over to 2011 we thought we’d share some of our candid thoughts on some of the strategies employed by the teams so far and what we think, straight shooting from the hip.

Where did the idea of the Race to a Million come from? Who is watching? Where are the teams at? What are they doing? Do they have a chance of getting there?

Video: Business Tips with Natalie Peace from Booster Juice Ep. 11

Local entrepreneur and just a generally inspiring person Natalie Peace joins us in the studio to talk about her business Booster Juice. Natalie shares some great advice for young entrepreneurs and talks about her motivations to make a difference when starting her company.

Natalie is a graduate from Thompson Rivers University who has followed her dreams in spite of the likelihood of success and challenges she faced. She found a franchise that was aligned with her own personal values and hasn’t looked back since. She’s worked hard to run her business while still attending her classes and eventually achieved her goals. It’s been four and half years now and Booster Juice now employees over 50 people in Kamloops.

Natalie measures her success not only through having a socially responsible business with healthy products but also how she is able to help her employees grow and how she can impact her customers to also participate in changing the world one random act of kindness at a time.

Natalie finds it rewarding to see her efforts over the last four and a half years have a lasting effect on over 350 people she’s had work for her. Many have gone on to become great leaders themselves and she’s very happy to have played her part. The random acts of kindness challenge that Natalie started has now generated over 44,000 random acts of kindness not only through her staff but also throughout the community and is now growing internationally.

Natalie shares with us that her success is due to three things: hiring the right people; being creative; and measuring her success on multiple bottom lines.

Video: Participant Spotlight Featuring Bernie Warren from Team TRU

Bernie WarrenDean catches up with Bernie Warren for this Team TRU participant spotlight on the third floor of the International Building at TRU World on the Thompson Rivers University campus.

From welding to the forestry sector to Earnst and Young’s Accounting Computer Consulting Group to cutting his teeth on Bay Street in Toronto Bernie has definitely earned the right to teach the business leaders of tomorrow at TRU’s School of Business. Bernie loves the Kamloops area and jumped at the chance to teach business here over 20 years ago. Today there are not many people who can boast about still being in the same job after 20 years but Kamloops should be proud that Bernie can. Bernie teaches operations management and computer related courses in the business degree program at Thompson Rivers University.

Bernie shares a little about the whole Race To A Million contest and how it’s working for the students. He says social media and connections play a significant roll.

Bernie also talks about the International Business Plan competitions in memory of Tony Brower held last year with participation from all over North America… first place went to TRU students and second place went to a lady for starting a special daycare in New York City… Bernie says that Race To A Million has helped garner some tremendous interest and support from the Kauffman Foundation for the TRU school of business and the International Business Plan competition.

Bernie thinks it’s going to take something BIG and QUICK that leverages technology somehow to succeed in the Race but beyond the race he sees a lot of future success and new challenges coming out of this exciting show.

Privacy, secrecy and protecting intellectual property is a very big challenge with entrepreneurs but Bernie thinks this “Old School” way of thinking is on the way out. Instead, he says the new economy is about sharing ideas and global participation. Don’t hold on to your ideas too tightly; ideas have to be shared so that we can all build on them.

Please Note:

Don’t forget if you’ve missed the full half hour shows of the Race To A Million on Shaw TV or if you don’t get them in your area you can watch them in high definition from the full-shows page of the Race To A Million website: to watch the full shows click here.

With you Team Genie says “together we can provide the support that the Make-A-Wish foundation really deserves”.
